Keyed alike vs master key: which arrangement do you need?

Start with the people and doors
For a home where everyone should use the front and back entrances, keyed alike may be enough. For a building where each tenant should open only their own space while a manager needs authorized access across units, a designed hierarchy serves a different purpose.
These are examples of access patterns, not ready-made building specifications. Write down the actual doors and authorized roles before choosing hardware.

A common key changes the consequence of losing it
With keyed-alike locks, a lost key can affect all doors sharing that combination. In a master system, the affected scope depends on which key level was lost. That makes issuance records and recovery procedures part of the design.
Do not label a physical key with an address and a complete access description. Keep the detailed door schedule in a controlled record so a lost key does not carry an easy map of what it opens.
Check the hardware before promising either arrangement
Not every cylinder supports both options. Kwikset's SmartKey documentation, for example, distinguishes rekeying its supported cylinder from master keying. Have the locksmith identify each lock rather than assuming any residential set can become a managed hierarchy.
Compatibility, future expansion, and key-copy control matter. Ask who can authorize duplicates and what happens if the servicing provider changes. A convenient arrangement that only one person understands can become difficult to maintain.
Order a written access schedule
Use a simple door-by-role table and get the owner or manager to approve it. After installation, test both permitted access and intended restrictions without distributing the private key plan publicly.
Choose the simplest arrangement that meets the actual need. Adding master levels creates administration work and may be unnecessary for a small house or one-room office.

Does keyed alike mean every lock of that brand uses my key?
No. It refers to the selected group of locks configured for that key. Other locks of the same brand are not thereby made compatible with it.
Is a master key a universal key?
No. It works only within the locks and hierarchy designed for that system. It is not a key to unrelated buildings or every lock made by a brand.
