Avoid turning a broken key into a damaged lock

Do not add glue, insert another key, or keep pushing the fragment inward. If the door is open, keep it open until the lock can be tested. If you are locked out, use an authorized spare entry or arrange help.

When calling, say whether the break is in a deadbolt, doorknob, or another lock. Tell the provider whether the door is currently locked and whether any part of the key is visible. These details affect the work they are quoting.

Keep the fragments and describe the history

Save the key head and any loose fragment. Mention whether the key was already bent, whether the door had to be pushed or pulled to lock, or whether both keys had begun sticking. The cause may involve the blade, cylinder, or door fit.

A break after months of resistance deserves more than extracting the fragment and handing back another copy. Ask the technician to check operation so the replacement key is not put under the same strain.

Separate the possible services

An extraction removes the broken piece. A new key restores a usable blade. Rekeying changes the accepted key. Hardware replacement addresses a lock that cannot be economically repaired or no longer suits the door.

• Ask whether the call-out and extraction are included in the estimate.
• Ask what happens if the cylinder is damaged or the fragment cannot be removed as planned.
• Approve any additional parts and labor before they are fitted.
• If keys were also lost or stolen, explain that separate security concern.

Test the repair before the door closes

Try the repaired lock with the door open first, then closed, from both sides as applicable. If a new key binds or the deadbolt rubs the frame, ask for that to be addressed before considering the job complete.

If this is a rental or a managed building, contact the owner or manager before changing the key system. A common building key or managed cylinder may be affected by an independent rekey.
