Check the key without forcing it
Confirm that it is the correct key and that it is not bent, cracked, or visibly damaged. If you have an undamaged spare that previously worked, try it with normal hand pressure. A key copied repeatedly from worn copies may behave differently from a sound original.
If the key will not insert fully, do not push another object into the keyway. Stop if you see foreign material or signs of attempted entry. Report that observation when arranging service.
Compare the door open and closed
Only do this if you can already open the door through normal access. Test the thumbturn and key while keeping the door open. Choose the repair that matches the symptom
Rekeying changes which key works. It does not straighten a sagging door or repair a broken mechanism. Ask the locksmith to distinguish an access-control change from a mechanical repair.
Avoid a universal lubricant recommendation. Follow the lock manufacturer's maintenance instructions, and do not mix products inside the cylinder. If a technician recommends replacement, ask what is damaged and whether the door itself also needs adjustment.
Check the finished work
Test from both sides with the door open first, then closed. The lock should work with ordinary effort and the door should close properly. Keep an alternative entry available while testing so a recurring fault does not lock you out.
