Does a car key need programming after a battery change?

Three jobs that are often called programming
A battery replacement restores power to the remote. Synchronization restores communication when a particular vehicle requires it. Immobilizer programming registers an authorized starting credential. A shop may use the word programming for more than one of these, so ask which operation is proposed.

An unchanged key is different from a new key
If the original board and transponder are still present, changing a coin cell does not turn the fob into a different key. Ford's cited manual specifically says battery replacement does not erase the programmed key. Other vehicles may have a documented synchronization step.
If you also changed the housing, the situation is different. A separate transponder may still be in the old shell, or the replacement may contain a different board. Keep the original parts until locking and starting have both been tested.
Questions to ask before authorizing the charge
Describe whether the car starts, whether the buttons work, and whether the spare works. A remote-entry fault alone should not be described as proof that the immobilizer has lost every key.
- What test shows that programming is necessary?
- Will this add a key, resynchronize a remote, or erase and relearn existing keys?
- Do all working keys need to be present?
- What is payable if the proposed operation does not solve the fault?
When professional programming does make sense
A replacement electronic key, a new control module, or a diagnosed registration problem may need equipment and authorized security access.
