Key fob not working after a battery change: what to check
Check battery fit, contacts, buttons, and backup starting before paying for a replacement fob or unnecessary programming.
Start with what changed
Compare the battery number with the owner's manual and the cell you removed. Similar-looking coin cells can differ in thickness. Follow the polarity markings in the case; do not assume that every fob takes the positive side facing up. A new cell can also be defective or have spent years on a shelf.
Look for an insulating sticker, a contact that no longer touches the cell, or a rubber button pad trapped under the cover. If the case no longer closes normally, stop pressing it together. A displaced circuit board or broken clip needs attention before another test.
Separate the symptoms
Stand next to the car and test the remote once. Then try your other working key. These observations help narrow the problem; they are not a diagnosis.

Do not jump straight to reprogramming
Ford explicitly states in one of its remote-control manuals that replacing the battery does not erase the programmed key. That example is a reason to check your own manual, not proof that every make uses the same design.
A locksmith can test whether the remote transmits and whether the vehicle recognizes its credential. Ask what failed before agreeing to a new fob. Pairing a replacement key, repairing a battery contact, and replacing a cracked shell are different jobs.
Get help without making the fault worse
Avoid scraping the board, bending contacts repeatedly, or trying programming sequences intended for a different model. Keep the old battery and any loose pieces so the technician can see what changed. Supply the year, make, model, trim, and whether you still have another starting key.

The fob lights up. Does that prove the battery is good?
No. An indicator shows that part of the circuit has power, but it does not prove reliable transmission, correct battery contact under load, or recognition by the car.
Should I disconnect the car battery to reset the key?
Do not use battery disconnection as a generic key repair. It can introduce other reset procedures without fixing the fob. Follow the vehicle manual or a diagnosis specific to the car.
