The key fob unlocks the car, but the car will not start
Learn why working remote buttons do not prove that the starting credential or vehicle battery is healthy, and what to report before buying a key.
Look at the starting symptom, not just the remote
Does the engine crank? Is there a Key Not Detected message or a security warning? Does the dashboard dim or go dark? These observations help the provider distinguish a key issue from a vehicle-power or starting-system problem.
On a hybrid or electric vehicle, use the manufacturer's ready-to-drive indication. Lack of engine noise is not by itself a no-start diagnosis. Toyota's hybrid guidance, for example, describes its READY indication and 12-volt battery separately.
A recent case change is a useful clue
If the fault began after moving the key into a new shell, keep the old case. Some keys have a starting transponder separate from the remote board; transferring only the visible board may restore the buttons but leave the starting credential behind.
That possibility is not proof of the cause in every key. Tell the technician whether the board, blade, battery, or entire electronic key was changed. The sequence is more useful than simply saying the key is new.
Try a controlled comparison
Use a spare that previously started this car and keep the suspect key away during the test. If the spare works, explain that result when booking. If both fail, ask for the vehicle side to be assessed too.
For a push-button vehicle, consult the documented backup-start procedure. Do not copy a reader location or reset sequence from another model. A backup method still needs the right credential and sufficient vehicle power.
Pay for the identified fault
Ask what failed: the remote, transponder, key registration, reader, or another vehicle component. A replacement fob should follow a diagnosis, not be the only response to every no-start complaint.
After repair, test each retained key independently and check the promised remote functions. If the provider cannot reproduce an intermittent fault, keep a record of when it occurs, temperature or weather, messages, and whether the spare also fails. Those details can guide the next diagnostic visit.
