Push-to-start says Key Not Detected: what to check first
Separate a weak fob, signal interference, backup-start procedure, and vehicle-battery problem when a push-button car will not recognize the key.
Read the message before trying a reset
Key Not Detected, Key Battery Low, and a general starting-system warning are not interchangeable. Write down the exact message or take a photo while parked. Note whether the dashboard, interior lights, and door locks have normal power.
Make sure the correct fob is actually inside the cabin. Take it out of a bag or metal container and move it away from another key, phone, or charging equipment. Try once in the ordinary starting position specified by the manual.
Use the spare as a comparison
If a known working spare starts the car, the first fob or its battery becomes the main suspect. If neither key works, the vehicle, environment, or starting procedure deserves attention before you buy two new keys.
The comparison is most useful when the spare was known to work recently. A key that has never started the vehicle is not a reliable control. On a hybrid, look for the vehicle's READY indication rather than judging only by whether the gasoline engine makes noise.
Find the actual backup-start instructions
Many vehicles provide a designated reader location for a weak fob. Its location and the required sequence vary: do not assume the cupholder or start button is correct for every car. Find the manual section on an inoperative electronic key.
Backup recognition still requires an authorized key and adequate vehicle power. It does not repair a damaged fob or overcome a discharged 12-volt battery. Toyota's starting documentation treats those conditions separately.
Choose the next call from the symptoms
An automotive locksmith is useful when the problem follows one key or you need a compatible replacement. Roadside assistance or a repair shop may be the better first call when the dashboard is dark, both keys fail, or another starting-system warning appears.

Will replacing the fob battery always fix this message?
No. A weak cell is one possibility, but interference, a damaged fob, vehicle-battery trouble, or a reader fault can produce similar symptoms.
