The lock spins, but the door will not unlock
Understand the difference between a rotating cylinder and a moving latch, and what to ask before a lock is drilled or replaced.
Describe what is actually moving
There is a difference between the key turning inside a fixed cylinder and the entire cylinder rotating in the door. A lever that moves loosely is another symptom. Observe without dismantling the lock or forcing the hardware.
Tell the locksmith whether this is a deadbolt, knob, lever, or multipoint door mechanism. Mention any recent installation, loose trim, or sudden failure after normal use. A photo of the hardware can help identify it without exposing key cuts.
Use normal access if it is available
If an authorized person can open the door normally from the other side, keep it open for assessment. Do not close a suspect lock simply to demonstrate the failure. If the door remains locked, explain that before agreeing to an estimate.
If the door is part of an escape route and someone cannot exit normally, treat that as an immediate safety issue. Arrange safe assistance rather than continuing to experiment with the lock.
Ask for the cause, not only a new cylinder
The mechanism that connects a cylinder or handle to the bolt can fail independently of the key combination. Rekeying alone does not reconnect a failed part. The technician may need to inspect mounting, the actuator, or the lock body after gaining authorized access. Ask which component failed, which parts can be retained, and whether the proposed repair preserves your current key. For managed buildings, ask the property manager whether the lock belongs to a master-key system before accepting an independent replacement.
Set the replacement and access terms
Agree on the access attempt, diagnostic charge, and approval point for destructive work. Drilling may sometimes be necessary, but a freely turning key is not itself a complete explanation of why.
After repair, test the key and interior control separately with the door open and then closed. Make sure the bolt actually moves through its intended travel. A turning key alone is not evidence that the door is secured.
Common questions
Will rekeying fix a spinning lock?
Only if the diagnosed fault is something the rekey service actually repairs. Changing the key combination by itself does not fix a broken connection, loose mounting, or failed lock body.
Should I keep turning until the bolt catches?
No. Repeated force can worsen a damaged connection. Record the symptom and arrange an assessment of the mechanism.
