Office lockout: what to check before anyone drills the door
Coordinate with building management, identify the commercial lock, and agree on access and repair terms before destructive work begins.
Find the person authorized to approve work
In a leased office, the landlord or property manager may control the cylinders and master-key system. An employee who needs entry is not necessarily authorized to replace that hardware. Establish approval before a technician arrives.
Check whether another authorized keyholder or building service can restore normal access. For electronic systems, ask the administrator whether a schedule, credential, or power issue explains the lockout.
Send the right description
Tell the provider whether the door has a cylinder, lever, keypad, reader, panic device, or multipoint hardware. Say whether it is a suite entry, exterior door, or interior room, and whether people can exit normally.
Do not publish a private key plan or access code to identify the job. A photo of the visible hardware and manufacturer label, where accessible, is usually a better starting point.
Agree on the decision point for drilling
A damaged lock or certain conditions may justify destructive access, but the technician should explain the assessment. Ask which part would be drilled or replaced, what alternatives were considered, and whether the correct replacement is available.
- Who approves a change in scope and maximum authorized amount?
- Will the replacement remain compatible with the building's key system?
- Does the door have a rating or required exit function to preserve?
- What temporary security is available if permanent parts are not on hand?
Verify the door before reopening the space
The result should include secure entry and normal exit, not merely an open door. Check the latch, closer, lock, retained keys or credentials, and any affected access-control function with the responsible manager.
OSHA's workplace exit requirements address normal inside release without a key or special operation. Local building and fire requirements also matter. Do not accept an improvised added lock that obstructs the approved exit function.

Only if it is appropriate for the hardware and approved key system. A temporary incompatible cylinder can create a new management or security problem.
