The keyway comes before the cuts
The keyway is the shaped opening and internal profile that accepts a particular key blank. The cuts along the blade work with the cylinder's combination. A key that does not fit the keyway cannot be made compatible merely by changing the combination.
Kwikset's SmartKey support identifies the supported keyway for that product family. Use the exact product documentation: brand names, similar-looking handles, and the number of pins are not sufficient compatibility checks.
Three possible outcomes for a mixed set
Ask the locksmith to inventory the doors before quoting. The answer can be different for the front deadbolt, patio hardware, garage entry, and a padlock.

Identify limitations before buying replacement locks
Send model information or photos of the visible hardware and keyway, without publishing readable key cuts. Ask whether the proposed solution preserves the lock's intended function, certification, and warranty.
A cylinder that physically fits is not automatically appropriate. Commercial, fire-rated, or managed-building doors can have specification requirements. Have the responsible owner or manager approve a change to a common key system.
Choose which doors should share access
One key is convenient, but every holder can open every door in that group. It may make sense to include household entries while keeping a rental unit, private office, or contractor-access gate separate.
After rekeying, test the new key in every included lock and confirm that the old keys no longer operate the changed cylinders. Ask for an itemized invoice distinguishing rekeying, cylinders, complete hardware, and extra copies.
