Find the approved backup key or power option for your smart lock, restore power safely, and check why the batteries ran down.
Identify the model before trying to power it
Find the model in your purchase records, app, or installation manual. A similar-looking keypad can use a different backup arrangement. Use only the connector and power source the manufacturer specifies; do not apply power to arbitrary contacts.
Schlage's Sense Pro documentation, for example, describes a USB-C backup-power option. That is an example for that product, not an instruction for every smart lock. A traditional backup cylinder, where present, uses its own key.
If you are already outside
Check whether a trusted person has the mechanical backup key or another authorized entrance is available. If you need a locksmith, provide the exact model and say that the batteries appear depleted. Ask whether the provider services that lock.
Do not dismantle an exterior reader or factory-reset the unit as a generic entry attempt. Resetting may remove credentials or settings while leaving the power problem unresolved.
Restore power and test with the door open
Replace batteries according to the manufacturer's chemistry, size, orientation, and full-set instructions. Avoid mixing old and new cells. Keep the door open while checking operation, then confirm that the bolt moves smoothly with it closed.
If the motor struggles, check door alignment through the installer. A mechanism that repeatedly fights the frame deserves attention; simply fitting fresh cells does not complete the repair.
Make the next low-battery warning useful
Identify which household member receives alerts and who will act on them. Keep the approved backup available outside the locked space and document the model without storing access codes in a public note.
If a fresh set drains unexpectedly, record the timing, usage, warnings, and any connection changes for manufacturer support. Battery life varies with the product and installation; do not assume the advertised maximum is a replacement schedule.
