Smart lock not responding: code, connection, or mechanical fault?
Diagnose the right layer of a smart-lock problem by comparing keypad access, local app control, remote control, and bolt movement.
Compare the functions one at a time
Start from a position where you still have authorized access and an alternative entry. Note the exact light, sound, or app message rather than describing every failure as offline.
| What works or fails | Area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Keypad works; remote app fails | Network, hub, account, or remote-service connection. |
| Local app works; a guest code fails | Code activation, schedule, permissions, or entry accuracy. |
| No keypad response | Power and the model's wake-up instructions. |
| Motor runs; bolt does not complete travel | Door fit, strike alignment, or hardware. |
| Owner access works; another user's app fails | Invitation, account, device, and assigned permissions. |
Check the code's actual permissions
Confirm that you are using an entry code rather than an administration code. Check start and expiry times, scheduled days, and whether the code was successfully saved to the lock. Offline systems may require a documented synchronization step.
Do not share the owner's password to solve a guest-access problem. Create or repair the intended permission through the supported administration process. If the lock shows a temporary lockout after incorrect attempts, follow its documented waiting period.
Treat network loss as a separate issue
Check the lock's supported network and any required hub. If a router, network name, password, or household phone recently changed, that history matters. Do not assume every product uses the same Wi-Fi band or connection procedure.
Some models retain local credentials during a network outage. Schlage documents this for specific products, but confirm your own model's behavior before relying on it. A remote status message may not prove the bolt's current physical position.
Reset only with a recovery plan
A factory reset can erase settings and force account setup again. First save the model information and understand which keys, credentials, and permissions will need to be restored. Follow manufacturer support when the ordinary checks do not resolve the fault.
After recovery, test with the door open, then closed. Check owner and guest access separately and remove any temporary troubleshooting credential that is no longer needed.
Common questions
Why does my app say unlocked when the door is still shut?
A lock-state report and the door's physical open or closed position are different measurements. Check what sensors the model actually has and inspect the door safely.
Should I delete the lock from my account and start again?
Only after understanding the recovery process. Removing it may discard useful permissions or pairing information without fixing power, alignment, or a network problem.
